How to Turn Jelly Jars into Spill-Resistant Drinking Cups | Easy DIY Hack

If you’re like me, you probably have a few empty jelly jars lying around the house, waiting to be thrown out. But what if you could repurpose them into something useful and stylish? In this DIY project, I’m going to show you how to turn those old jelly jars into spill-resistant drinking cups. This is a super simple and eco-friendly craft that anyone can do, even if you're not the handiest person around! With just a few basic materials, you can make a set of reusable cups that are not only practical but also a fun way to repurpose items you already have at home.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Empty jelly jars (or any glass jars with a lid)

  • A drill with a half-inch drill bit (I used a wood-boring bit, but any half-inch bit will work)

  • Rubber gaskets (available here)

  • Some straws

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Jelly Jar and Lid

    • Start by cleaning the jelly jar thoroughly to remove any leftover residue. Let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.

    • Take the lid of the jelly jar and get your drill ready with a half-inch bit. If you don’t have a wood-boring drill bit, that’s okay—any half-inch drill bit will do the job!

  2. Drill the Hole in the Lid

    • Carefully drill a hole right in the center of the lid. This hole needs to be wide enough for your straw to fit snugly, so make sure it’s about half an inch in diameter.

    • Tip: Make sure to drill slowly and evenly to keep the hole as neat as possible.

  3. Insert the Rubber Gasket

    • Now, grab your rubber gasket and insert it into the hole you just drilled. This step is key to making the lid spill-resistant. The rubber gasket will create a tight seal, preventing any leaks when you add your drink to the jar.

    • You can find these gaskets on Amazon or at most hardware stores. They’re small, inexpensive, and totally worth the investment!

  4. Assemble the Cup

    • Once the gasket is in place, simply screw the lid back onto the jar. Now, you have a spill-resistant, reusable cup made from a repurposed jelly jar!

    • If you like, you can also add a straw to the lid for extra convenience. Simply pop the straw into the hole, and you’re all set!

Final Touches:

Once your cup is assembled, fill it with your favorite drink—whether it’s water, iced tea, or a fun fruit punch! You’ll have a practical, eco-friendly drinking cup that’s both stylish and functional.

This simple DIY project is a great way to give your old jelly jars a new life while helping the planet. Not only are you repurposing materials you already have at home, but you’re also creating a set of spill-resistant cups that can be used for anything—perfect for both kids and adults! Plus, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve reduced waste and created something useful in the process.

So, grab those jelly jars and get started! If you decide to give this project a try, let me know how it goes in the comments below, or feel free to share your photos on social media and tag me—I’d love to see how your cups turn out!
